From the very start, research and development has been...
... a main focus of the company founder Dr.-Ing. Vasilios Gemenetzis. The engineer for material science graduated in powder metallurgy from the Technical University of Karlsruhe in 1979 and founded the company for producing sintered metals according to a self-developed procedure in Walldorf (Baden, Germany) in 1982.
Two years later, the expanding company moved to Graben-Neudorf. Since 1994, SMP has been specialized in producing electronic components. Material science still plays a prominent role in the developing of the extremely low-loss inductive components: the powder composite materials used for the components are expressly produced for each application according to customer specifications.
Over the years, SMP developed into one of the most important providers of components for soft magnetic materials in industrial applications on the world market. In order to be able to cover the entire component production cycle, an in-house production plant for metal powder was founded in 2008. Since 2011, SMP has expanded productions by a plastics injection molding plant in order to be able to produce coil carriers and insulation materials on its own.
SMP produces nearly 100 percent of the products custom-made. The products are marketed worldwide with an export rate of over 50 percent. To ensure the shift in generations, the company founder's two sons, who are already involved in the company, study Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).
